In the final rowing race of the 2015 Pan American Games in St. Catherine’s, Ontario, the U.S. men’s eight won the bronze medal, finishing behind Canada and Argentina.
The boat included Penn AC’s Erick Winstead (Fairfield, Conn.) and Vesper’s Taylor Brown (Winter Park, Fla.) – Brown is a Penn AC alum. Their boatmates were Keane Johnson (Palo Alto, Calif.), Nareg Guregian (North Hills, Calif.), Kyle Peabody (LaGrange, N.Y.), David Eick (Raleigh, N.C.), Brendan Harrington (Garden City, N.Y.) Matthew Mahon (St. Louis, Mo.), and coxswain Sam Ojserkis (Linwood, N.J.).
“I’m really proud of my boat for coming together and giving some very talented competition a good fight,” said Winstead after the race. “I’m happy because we’re able to take home some hardware, but I’m disappointed because you don’t enter a race to come in 3rd.”
“We at Penn AC are very proud of Erick and Taylor and congratulate them on their bronze medal!” said Penn AC President Mike Wherley. “They have both worked very hard over the years to get to this point, and earning a medal of any color is always a great achievement.”

NEXT UP: Winstead and Brown will be racing in the U.S. Men’s Coxed Pair with Univ. of Pennsylvania coxswain Jacob Mendelson (Jacksonville, Fla.) at the World Rowing Championships in Aiguebelette, France from August 30 – September 6.
To wrap up his Pan Am Games, Winstead said, “This was a good experience, and my first real taste of international competition. I still have a big summer ahead of me, so it’s no time to be content or complacent.”
