No Experience Necessary!!
Penn AC recognizes that many people in Philadelphia and the surrounding communities drive by Boathouse Row and the Schuylkill River regularly and see the rowing shells on the water and think to themselves, “I would love to try that”. Penn AC’s Learn-to-Row (LTR) classes are open to the public, help open the doors to Boathouse Row and are designed for those who have always wanted to try rowing to give it a try. You do not need to be a member of the Club to register for and participate in the classes. Again, no experience is necessary!
This year, we will offer lessons spring, summer and fall. Each season, we will offer 2-3 different sessions of LTR classes. Each session consists of 6 classes and is 3 weeks in length. There are 3 different class day / time slots to choose from during each session – M/W from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, T / Th from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM and Sa / Su from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM. Our hope is one of these day/time slots will provide you with the opportunity needed to give it a try. Starting in our Summer Session 3, we will offer Level 2 LTR classes. These classes are designed for those who have already completed a Level 1 course and are interested in continuing to build upon the skills already learned. Level 2 puts you on the path to becoming a member of the Club. Please see our class schedule below for the dates and class times of each session currently being offered.
Penn AC Level 1 Learn-to-Row is designed to teach those with no rowing experience the basics of the sport. These classes will focus on teaching proper boat handling, the basics of rowing / sculling, and boathouse etiquette. While all of our classes are geared toward beginners, if after trying one of our LTR classes you are excited to continue learning to row at Penn AC, try out one of our Level 2 classes being offered in the summer and fall!
Jackie Davison, a Philadelphia area native, began rowing at Conestoga High School when she was 15. Following a successful high school rowing career, including winning the 2003 USRowing Youth National Championship in the women’s quad, she continued to row for four years at Boston College.
During her summer breaks in college, Jackie coached for PA Rowing Camps learn-to-row program, teaching hundreds of people how to row. After graduating from Boston College, she continued to coach as the graduate assistant coach for the women’s team at Temple University while she earned her J.D.
After graduating from Temple, she has continued to coach both at the collegiate and high school level, most recently spending the last 5 years coaching Conestoga High School’s Novice Rowing Team.
For any person who has the desire to learn to row. No experience is necessary.
All participants must sign Penn AC’s Release of Liability and be able to swim.
