Penn AC is excited to announce that it has hired Dave Herrick as the Associate Head Coach – Junior Men and Dave Hammond as the Associate Head Coach – Junior Women to join David Lindstrom in leading its 2018 Penn AC Gold High Performance Junior Camp. Coach Herrick will return to Penn AC to help lead the Junior Men’s program after serving as an assistant for the junior men the past two summers, and Coach Hammond will help lead the Junior Women’s program. Congratulations to them both on their hires.
“We can’t wait to get started on another great year for Penn AC Gold!” said Penn AC President Mike Wherley. “With Coach David Lindstrom at the helm, Coach Herrick and Coach Hammond will have great direction and leadership. This new coaching structure will benefit all our athletes and make Penn AC Gold even stronger.”
Dave Herrick comes to Penn AC from the University of Virginia, where he is in his first season as the program’s Graduate Assistant Coach and second overall with UVA under Head Coach Kevin Sauer. Last summer, he was the Lead Assistant for Penn AC’s Junior Men’s squad, which had a strong showing at the USRowing Club National Championships, including qualifying three U19 8+s for the semifinals and placing a U19 4+ the finals.
Wherley said, “The junior men did well last Summer and Coach Herrick played a large part in their success. Dave took great care to make sure those athletes improved their rowing and racing skills every day. He also brings broad experience from his prior coaching positions, and we are very happy to have him leading the Junior Men this summer!”
Before joining the University of Virginia, Dave served as a Volunteer Assistant for the men at Syracuse University in 2015-2016. He also served as an Assistant Coach at Washington State University during the 2014-2015 season. With his help, WSU won the Light 8+ and 4+ at the WIRA Championship and had its best season in 5 years.
Dave Hammond joins Penn AC as the Junior Women’s Associate Head Coach.
He comes to Penn AC from the University of California, Davis and the River City Rowing Club, both in Sacramento, California and currently serves as the Head Women’s Coach for both programs. This will be his first time coaching on the Schuylkill River and at Penn AC.
“Coach Hammond is going to be a great asset to our Junior Women’s team!” said Wherley. “He brings a lot of passion, drive and love for the sport and is always focused on helping his athletes reach their goals.”
Prior to UC Davis and River City Rowing, Dave began his coaching career at Everett Rowing Association in Washington State where he started rowing as a junior rower. He helped guide Everett to many successes, including multiple Brentwood Regatta Championships and a silver at the NW Regional Championship prior to moving to Sacramento to coach UC Davis. UC Davis experienced its best season last season, winning the Novice 8+ at the San Diego Crew Classic and medaling at both WIRA and ACRA Championships.
In addition to both Dave Herrick and Dave Hammond, Penn AC has hired Julian Stephanski from Pacific Rowing Club in San Francisco, CA as its Assistant Junior Men’s Coach and Emilie Muller from Wellesley College in Wellesley, MA to be is Assistant Junior Women’s Coach.
