Juniors Sweep Independence Day Regatta to Lead a Strong Penn AC Performance in Philadelphia

by: creich

Congratulations to the Penn AC athletes who raced this past weekend at the Independence Day Regatta on the Schuylkill River.  We had some outstanding results! The Junior Men and the Junior Women were very impressive, with each winning 3 sweep events: the Jr. 8+, the Jr. 4+ and the J16 4+.”This was truly a dominating performance by our junior teams, and it bodes well for Club Nationals next week in Cincinnati,” said Penn AC President Mike Wherley. “We have a very strong junior squad across the board, and our head coaches Dustin Kraus and Melanie Salter deserve a lot of credit.”

The U23 Men won the Intermediate 4+, placed 2nd and 3rd in the Intermediate 8+, and also narrowly missed the gold medal in the Mens 4x, finishing less than a second behind Crescent to get 2nd place.  The U23 Women placed 2nd in the Open 8+.

U23 Women’s Coach Ted Swinford said, “We put our best women up against Vesper’s best in the Open 8+. It was ambitious, [but] our Penn AC women rowed with something to prove.”

Penn AC’s High Performance Group grabbed two wins as well – the Lightweight Women’s 2x of Mary Mosier and Kristin Propst won their event by 10 seconds and the Men’s 2- of Charles Anderson and Tom Robinson won their event beating out strong, local competition.

“It was a strong showing by our U23 and High Performance teams, and we expect they can build on this in Cincinnati” said Wherley.
